Things Only Halloween Lovers Can Understand

If you shed a few tears when you realized you were too old for trick-or-treating.. if you start planning your costume six months early.. if you have a full october agenda to get your into the holiday spirit.. YOU LOVE HALLOWEEN. Don’t worry, you aren’t alone.

There are only 27 days left! Start doing whatever it is that you do to get your Halloween ON.

Here are some important things that only Halloween lovers can understand:

  1. Watching Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas (this one works for both Halloween AND Christmas), Halloweentown and every scary movie ever on repeat

images-1

Don’t let the non-festives get you down. Don’t feel bad about showing up late to a social gathering because you had to finish the ending to Hocus Pocus for the 300th time. This is the time to let your imagination run wild. Maybe it’s the changing weather that’s making us truly believe that we can get on a broomstick and fly away..

These movies will never get old. Grab a friend or just have a movie night ‘party of one’ and catch up on all your Halloween favs.. because soon it’s time to switch into instant Holiday mode.

2. Having Your Costume Planned Since November 1st, 2014

It’s never too early to plan ahead. This gives you 100% dibs on a great costume idea if one of your friends suddenly decides they too want to be Drunk Hillary Clinton (thank me now for this all-star costume). Don’t be afraid to go all out and dress up like a crazy woman/man. Halloween is the time to be whoever you want to be! Let boring people be boring, but you go out and flaunt your impression.. there’s always time to be yourself on Monday.

3. Getting Too Much Candy “On Accident”

candy-drive

“I’ll grab two.. maybe three big bags.. there could be a lot of kids this year.” Unless you live on a very busy street or love handing out handfuls of candy, you want some of the purchased candy for yourself! I mean, since it’s suddenly unacceptable to go out Trick-or-Treating.. we have to get our candy somehow. Don’t have any shame, eat all the candy you want.

4. Decorating The House In September

Was it still 75 degrees but you just HAD to have your pumpkins and spiderwebs sprawled out everywhere in your front yard? Did the inside smell of pumpkin spice and have adorable decor in every room? You are a true Halloween super fan and nobody can tell you otherwise. Halloween happens way too fast, so put your things up as early as you want! It does only last ONE day.

5. Dressing Up Your Pets

If there’s anything more entertaining than picking out your own costume, it’s picking out something for your dog or cat (and other various exotic pets). If you want a good few minutes of joy, google “pets in Halloween costumes”. Let the trick-or-treaters get greeted by your Pumpkin Spice Latte Pug or Sushi Roll Kitty. They will probably not enjoy it, but hey.. it’s almost over.

DIY Fall Floral Wreath

Since it’s FINALLY getting chilly here and starting to feel like fall, I decided to do a little DIY to welcome it properly.. right at the front door. I made a super easy wreath that features all fall colors. This is fun to make your own and use whatever flowers you like. Michael’s craft store had 50% off all their fall florals, so if you have one of those near you check it out. This really helped me get even more into the autumn spirit. OCTOBER IS TOMORROW!

What You’ll Need (I got all of this at Michael’s):

  • Bouquets of Fake Fall Florals
  • Wreath Form
  • Ribbon
  • Hot Glue Gun + Glue
  • Scissors
  • Wreath Door Hanger

Steps:

  1. Cut off ‘stems’ of flowers from the floral bouquet. This takes a little bit of see-sawing the scissors on the wire for a little while. I won’t say it’s the easiest thing, but don’t worry it will happen. Before attaching them permanently, arrange them on your form (the stems bend making this easy) to see how it WILL look. While doing this, make sure your hot glue gun is getting heated up.

2. This is the fun part. Time to attach all the stems! Curve all the stems to easily attach to the circle form. Apply hot glue onto form and put the stem on it and hold for a solid minute. Continue all the way around the wreath. If you run into issues with the hot glue and it’s not holding, get some floral wire that matches your wreath to wrap around the stems. I used the gold dangles on the bottom row to support mine.

3. For the top row of my form, I decided to do an almost ‘flower crown’ to create an interesting look. To do this, I ditched the hot glue. I simply wrapped the stems all the way around the form (since it’s just wire) to secure the flowers. It worked like a charm. It does take a little bit of finger power, but it’s worth it.

4. If everything is how you want it, then it’s time to hang it. Put your beautiful work on display! I lucked out with our red door which perfectly accented the colors in my wreath.

It adds so much charm and it’s not very time consuming or difficult to do!

Thanks for reading! I hope you try this out yourself.

8 Signs You’re Dating The Right Guy

The twenties can be a rough time for relationships. Between work and school, it’s hard to make time for getting to know someone.. which leads to the unfortunate meeting places: parties, bars and walking home drunk at 3 AM. Those are all 10/10 places you (probably) don’t want to meet your future boo-thang.

Chances are there have probably been a lot of wrong turns in your previous relationships and THAT’S OKAY. The reason we are all where we are now is because we made dumb decisions and learned from them.

Here are 8 signs you KNOW you’re dating the right guy:

  1. He’s Also Your Best Friend

You get each others jokes and find some of them hilarious. You have a billion inside jokes that nobody else cares to understand. You don’t judge each other for your weird food cravings at 1 AM. This is so important to a solid relationship. You should be able to be 100% real with one another. I mean, you probably don’t want to live with this person in the future if they aren’t your BFF. Test this by taking a weekend trip somewhere and make sure you don’t kill each other. If you survive and have a great time.. you’re in a great relationship!

2. Your Fights Only Last An Hour (Or Less)

As the true American hero Hannah Montana once said.. “Nobody’s Perfect”. If you have yet to fight in your relationship, sorry to tell you this, but there is probably something wrong.. or you just don’t express your feelings the way you should. There is no way you are ever going to be 100% happy and okay with each other. ONE OF YOU WILL MAKE THE OTHER MAD.. even if it’s over something very stupid like not choosing where to eat fast enough (I’m very guilty of this). If you do fight, unless it’s something hardcore enough to end the whole relationship, it probably should not last more than an hour. One of you will give in and forgive.. because you really just like each other too much to waste time fighting.

3. He Cares About Your Feelings/Well-Being

Whether it be emotional, medical or you’re just feeling down.. he is there to help you through it all. You may be the biggest mess ever known to man and he still thinks you’re a shining star (IMPORTANT). If there is something that is bothering you, he will quickly be able to figure it out and try to make you feel better.

4. He Doesn’t Let You Go Hungry

Food is so important, duh! If you are anything like me you are aware of the phenomenon that is starting fights all over the world: being HANGRY. Hangry is the feeling you get when you’re so hungry that you’re angry. It’s an awful way to be. You become the real life Snicker’s “you’re not you when you’re hungry” commercial. Luckily, your BF should be able to recognize this and work with you to find the hungry hippo some good eats.

5. You Share Similar Hobbies/Interests

Going back to #1, much like any of your best friends.. he likes the things you like (to an extent). Maybe you both love to go watch figure skating competitions on the weekend (weird, but cool). Maybe you both love AC/DC. No matter what weird little quirks you have together, they will help prove your relationships strength. Date someone as weird as you are and it will pay off.

6. He Takes You On Cute Dates Once In A While

After the initial beginning-of-dating phase, chances are the adorable, thought-out dates will slowly decrease. After all, it can get expensive for young people still in school to go on elaborate dates all the time. But, that’s no excuse for never doing anything for the next 6 months. Plan a few cute dates a month to get out of the usual grind. Go have a picnic (it’s basically free).

7. He Understands Your Celebrity Crushes

How can I not swoon over Chris Pratt. It’s impossible. Every woman has at least 10 celebrities that they want. You know you’ve lucked out when you can talk about them and your BF just kind of goes “mhm”. Whether or not he’s secretly jealous or annoyed at your 14-year-old fan girling, he sure won’t stop you. (Don’t let him act like he doesn’t have a huge list himself.. because he does).

8. He Lifts You UP

He thinks that most of your ideas are great ones. He thinks that dress looks really cool on you (even if that dress looks really dumb). This is how you know you have a good one. You should always try to encourage each other and make each other feel like beautiful, shining trophies. Seeing him should make you SMILE and visa versa.

I WENT GHOST HUNTING?? (and life update)

LIFE UPDATE:

It has been a kind of insane month. I say that as calmly as I can, but there were certainly points that were SCREAM worthy. It started with trying to move to the city for school, spending weeks searching and still ending up with nothing in the end. This adds an obvious level of stress to my life with having to commute to the city 3+ days a week. The other things (which are just a little too personal to share right now) all roll into one big stress tortilla.

On a positive note, I just received some official word that I will be a writer for Her Campus! If you don’t know what this is, don’t worry, I’ll tell you! It’s an online publication for college age women (I know, awesome, right?) and Columbia College now has their own branch on the site. So, this is a pretty big thing for me and I can’t wait to work on some great stuff with some great, powerful gals. I can’t wait to share it with you all.

——————

So I went ghost hunting. That’s right. It’s as weird as it sounds.

Let me give you a little back story real quick:

My parents have been super into going on ghost tours and doing some searching adventures for the past year. Last October, I decided to join them on a late-night tour through Downtown Naperville, IL. I was not scared at all going in because, honestly, I thought it was all dumb, but since it was near Halloween I went for something spooky to do. Within the first 20 minutes I was so terrified I had to opt out of the tour and run to the nearest Barnes and Noble for some brightly-lit salvation. That’s right, I CANNOT HANDLE PARANORMAL STUFF.

So fast forward to yesterday,

I was with my wonderful boyfriend Thomas and he had been pushing me to go with him for a few weeks. He saw the pictures of what my parents had captured on their phones and just NEEDED to see it for himself. i get the creeps even thinking about going, but I decided to push my fear aside and go with him (we went during daylight so I was fine). We walked around the historic Downtown Naperville for about an hour. It was actually a lovely walk because the weather felt very fall-like. I brought my DSLR and he used his phone; we snapped random pictures during the entire duration of the walk.

tumblr_ntlkyaLrzs1qesa1ho2_400I was freaking out during the entire thing. But, we left, went home and put the SD card into the computer. My heart rate was still way too high, anticipating what we might see. And, guess what? We found some really, really creepy stuff! Enough to make Tom, his mom, and me fall backwards.

IMG_2279

I’ll insert some pictures and you can look & find for yourselves (it will require some serious zooming). But, if you’re looking for something ridiculously weird to do, I suggest giving it a go. I probably wouldn’t do it again, and certainly not at night, but it was a cool one-and-a-half time experience.

HERE THEY ARE:

I promise I’m not as weird as this post is.

HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERYONE.

How I Stay Energized Without Coffee (From A Former Caffeine Addict)

About a year ago, my daily routine included waking up and going for a Starbucks black iced coffee. I would go to class, get whatever else I needed to get done and then end up going for another cup. The typical routine for a college student (especially in the busy city). It was great for a while; I felt like a superhero able to do whatever I needed. I had extra energy to work out and stay up all night to finish homework.  I went to Starbucks so often that I had earned the privilege of the almighty GOLD CARD (a special gold, glittery card with your name on it which gives you a free drink after 12 purchased drinks).

I thought everything was great until I noticed that the stimulant had started stimulating.. but way too much. It triggered my anxiety disorder and had me shaking and in full-blown panic mode. I knew I had to kick it to the curb. Not only were my poor teeth suffering from the heavy staining of black coffee, but my nervous system just couldn’t take it anymore. I was pretty upset that I had to let it go; there is nothing I love more than a fresh brewed cup. But now, a full year later, I am doing completely fine without it.

Here are some ways that I keep energized WITHOUT coffee..

1. TEA

If there is one thing I could hype up to everyone.. it’s tea. Not only are a good amount of teas really healthy for you, but most of them taste really, really great. There are plenty of caffeinated options such as green tea and black tea that range from 25-70 mg which is plenty to give you a buzz to keep going; brewed coffee has 200 mg of caffeine (and if you’re anything like me.. beware). When I’m really not feeling caffeine at all, Rooibos tea is great caffeine-free option and they have the best flavors.

2. EXERCISE

It may sound backwards, “how can putting out more energy make me less tired?” But, believe it or not, working out is one of the best things you can do to feel more energized. Even if it’s as simple as a walk around the hood or a bike ride with your guy/gal (or even your dog if you have a basket) you are getting your heart pumping and body moving which is enough to make you feel better.

3. DIET

Nobody’s perfect: I can’t say this enough when it comes to eating. Especially if you’re from the Midwest like I am, you understand that we love food and no one can stop us. But if you substitute your deep dish and everything Portillo’s for some healthy alternatives you will notice a serious shift in your mood and energy levels. When the body is getting the nourishment it’s supposed to be, you will feel it from the inside. Start your morning with a healthy breakfast instead of a few donuts and notice the difference. It truly speaks for itself.

4. SLEEP MORE THAN 4 HOURS

I know.. so hard, right? If you live a busy life you know how hard it can be to get a good nights sleep. But, try your best to not put sleep on the back burner. Your body needs at least 6 hours to be able to function properly throughout the day (even though 8 is recommended). So, if you can, cut your night out on the town a few hours early (if the sun is coming up you’ve probably over done it) and get that needed sleep time. You will feel way more energized than you thought possible.

5. KEEP BUSY

If you have a full day agenda, you will keep moving and keep focused which in turn keeps you from sitting around and feeling sluggish. Start a hobby, join a club, make plans with friends you haven’t seen in a while and get going! There is a good chance you’re not as tired as you think you are.

If you guys can relate to the coffee blues, then try out some of these tips and you will no longer be reaching for that cup o’ joe.
