Fall Beauty Obsessions

I should probably just get it tattooed on me at this point.. I’m obsessed with Fall. I’m going to share with you all what I’ve been loving so far into this season. I didn’t get a chance to do a “september favorites” post.. so here is my kinda september favorites and kinda october favorites collection of stuff:

Essie Nail Polishes

 IMG_2845

Until recently, I was a total ONLY O.P.I kinda girl. I really don’t have any reasoning behind that other than I thought they were the best and I liked how the color turnout was. But, I bought the purple polish in the shade ‘Bahama Mama’ back in September and really liked how it looked. Then, just a few days ago I purchased the coppery-gold shade ‘Leggy Legend’ and it is SO PERFECT for this time of year. It’s on my nails now and I’m very obsessed. Sorry for cheating on you O.P.I

PRICE: $8.50 each (I got mine at Ulta)

Midnight Romance by Ralph Lauren

IMG_2846

I’m very picky when it comes to fragrances. I rarely like any and I have to smell the entire perfume section at Sephora to figure out which one I like. This one really INTRIGUED me. It has a almost fruity, sultry scent and I am into it. I would suggest it, but everyone has super different opinions on fragrance.

Also, the next fragrance I’m looking to buy is Elizabeth & James (aka Mary Kate + Ashley Olsen) Nirvana Black. It is suppper rich and almost manly.. just my kind of perfume.

PRICE (for Midnight Romance): $54.00 at Sephora

Skin Saviors

IMG_2847

I have the driest skin known to mankind. My hands get absolutely awful the second the weather changes (but really I have problems in the summer too). Absolutely no other lotion works for my hands other than Gold Bond Ultimate Healing Hand Cream. This stuff is AMAZING. It isn’t greasy and gross like lots of other lotions and it absorbs super quick. This is my second container of it. Also, I have to have my Body Shop Lip Butter because these lips crack super easy. It hydrates your lips all day and tastes good as a bonus.

PRICE: Gold Bond – Around $5.00 at any drugstore

Body Shop Lip Butter – $7.00

All The Naked Palettes (almost)

IMG_2848

The hype is true.. these are amazing. I’ve had the first Naked Palette for a super long time. I think I got it the Christmas after it came out. Since I sparingly use eyeshadows, all of my colors are still intact. I love each one separately and can’t pick a favorite. Here’s the simple way to identify them: Naked 1: Super Natural Tones 2. Smoky Eyes and Cool Tones 3. Pinky Tones

They are each around $54.00 which is kinda pricey compared to your average drugstore eyeshadows (obviously) but these are so worth it. I have yet to get the Naked Smoky palette because I rarely wear any super dark eye looks.

Lorac Pro, Naked Flushed and Dream BB

IMG_2849

I got the Lorac Pro before last Christmas and didn’t really get around to using it much until Summer. These shadows have such good color payoff and are all really gorgeous. I usually mix the shades from this with shades from the Naked Palettes. It’s definitely one of my favorites that I own.

The Naked Flushed palette was given to me by my good friend (I know she’s so nice) and I have really been liking it. I am usually terrified of blushes because I always feel like I over-do it.. but the pink shade in here is really subtle and natural. I’m a fan. It also has a bronzer and highlighter inside. It’s a super nice little package.

I use the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream very often (like everyday often) because it’s super light and the coverage is perfect for me. I have like exceptionally clear skin for how bad I am at taking care of it, so I don’t need a whole lot of coverage. It also acts as a moisturizer and sunscreen which I really appreciate.

PRICES:

Lorac Pro: $42.00 on their website

Naked Flushed: $32.00 at Sephora

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream: $6.29 at Target

Sunglasses

IMG_2850

These aren’t just any sunglasses.. They’re PRESCRIPTION sunglasses. When I found out about these cheap prescription sunglasses I was literally the happiest person ever. I have really bad vision (like so bad I can’t see anything but BLUR without my glasses on) and these allow me to finally see out of SUNGLASSES. I got them on Eyebuydirect.com. It’s one of those cheap glasses websites where you tell them your prescription and they make them for you. It’s a pretty great deal. They go with almost everything I wear too (I also have a different black pair).

Candles and More Candles

IMG_2853

I worked at Bath and Body Works.. I worked at White Barn.. and I can officially say that I know my candles. There is nothing that brings me more joy than getting new candles. I am especially in love with every single fall scented candle that exists pretty much. I picked up Sweater Weather and Leaves from White Barn a few weeks ago and I can’t stop burning them. Also I had to include one of my all-time favorite candles Woodwick Campfire Marshmallow.. this one lasts forever (even though mine is almost gone) and smells so good. It also crackles while it burns!

Try to go to Bath and Body Works or White Barn during a sale like 2 for $24. They happen all the time so just check in once in a while. Otherwise they’re $22.50 each for a 3-wick which is just ridiculous.

There is no such thing as too many candles. GO CRAZY.

Thanks for reading everyone and welcome new followers!

xoxo Emily

8 Signs You’re Dating The Right Guy

The twenties can be a rough time for relationships. Between work and school, it’s hard to make time for getting to know someone.. which leads to the unfortunate meeting places: parties, bars and walking home drunk at 3 AM. Those are all 10/10 places you (probably) don’t want to meet your future boo-thang.

Chances are there have probably been a lot of wrong turns in your previous relationships and THAT’S OKAY. The reason we are all where we are now is because we made dumb decisions and learned from them.

Here are 8 signs you KNOW you’re dating the right guy:

  1. He’s Also Your Best Friend

You get each others jokes and find some of them hilarious. You have a billion inside jokes that nobody else cares to understand. You don’t judge each other for your weird food cravings at 1 AM. This is so important to a solid relationship. You should be able to be 100% real with one another. I mean, you probably don’t want to live with this person in the future if they aren’t your BFF. Test this by taking a weekend trip somewhere and make sure you don’t kill each other. If you survive and have a great time.. you’re in a great relationship!

2. Your Fights Only Last An Hour (Or Less)

As the true American hero Hannah Montana once said.. “Nobody’s Perfect”. If you have yet to fight in your relationship, sorry to tell you this, but there is probably something wrong.. or you just don’t express your feelings the way you should. There is no way you are ever going to be 100% happy and okay with each other. ONE OF YOU WILL MAKE THE OTHER MAD.. even if it’s over something very stupid like not choosing where to eat fast enough (I’m very guilty of this). If you do fight, unless it’s something hardcore enough to end the whole relationship, it probably should not last more than an hour. One of you will give in and forgive.. because you really just like each other too much to waste time fighting.

3. He Cares About Your Feelings/Well-Being

Whether it be emotional, medical or you’re just feeling down.. he is there to help you through it all. You may be the biggest mess ever known to man and he still thinks you’re a shining star (IMPORTANT). If there is something that is bothering you, he will quickly be able to figure it out and try to make you feel better.

4. He Doesn’t Let You Go Hungry

Food is so important, duh! If you are anything like me you are aware of the phenomenon that is starting fights all over the world: being HANGRY. Hangry is the feeling you get when you’re so hungry that you’re angry. It’s an awful way to be. You become the real life Snicker’s “you’re not you when you’re hungry” commercial. Luckily, your BF should be able to recognize this and work with you to find the hungry hippo some good eats.

5. You Share Similar Hobbies/Interests

Going back to #1, much like any of your best friends.. he likes the things you like (to an extent). Maybe you both love to go watch figure skating competitions on the weekend (weird, but cool). Maybe you both love AC/DC. No matter what weird little quirks you have together, they will help prove your relationships strength. Date someone as weird as you are and it will pay off.

6. He Takes You On Cute Dates Once In A While

After the initial beginning-of-dating phase, chances are the adorable, thought-out dates will slowly decrease. After all, it can get expensive for young people still in school to go on elaborate dates all the time. But, that’s no excuse for never doing anything for the next 6 months. Plan a few cute dates a month to get out of the usual grind. Go have a picnic (it’s basically free).

7. He Understands Your Celebrity Crushes

How can I not swoon over Chris Pratt. It’s impossible. Every woman has at least 10 celebrities that they want. You know you’ve lucked out when you can talk about them and your BF just kind of goes “mhm”. Whether or not he’s secretly jealous or annoyed at your 14-year-old fan girling, he sure won’t stop you. (Don’t let him act like he doesn’t have a huge list himself.. because he does).

8. He Lifts You UP

He thinks that most of your ideas are great ones. He thinks that dress looks really cool on you (even if that dress looks really dumb). This is how you know you have a good one. You should always try to encourage each other and make each other feel like beautiful, shining trophies. Seeing him should make you SMILE and visa versa.

7 Irritations Only Women With Tattoos Will Understand

There  is no better permanent self-expression than a well-done tattoo. Of course, they’re not for everyone; kind of like blue lipstick isn’t for everyone, but do we say anything to THOSE people.. no.. we look away. As women are becoming more and more liberated (or trying), tattoos are becoming even more acceptable in modern society (not that we care).

I am definitely far from “tatted up”, but I do have a few tattoos and it’s enough to have gathered some knowledge on what it’s like to be a 2015 woman with some super cool body art.

Here are the biggest irritations only women with tattoos will understand:

  • Being Told “You’re Gonna Regret That”

Chances are we’re not going to “regret that” and even if we do.. let us deal with that later on. We got these tattoos because we loved them and wanted them on us permanently; that’s a big commitment that we probably thought out.

  • Having Older People Gawk At You In Public

**Bonus Irritation: They Talk Loud Enough for You to Hear Them Insult You

Nothing better then being in line to grab a coffee, looking over and seeing a few middle-aged people whispering to each other while obviously staring (and sometimes pointing) at your tattoos. Sometimes you even get the added bonus of them talking purposefully loud enough for you to hear that they HATE your tattoo and that they would NEVER do that. Sorry we can’t please you, Carol.

  • When Your Color Tattoos Clash With Your Outfit

Not a huge deal, but can lead to a little bit of irritation. Your yellow little bird on your arm may turn you into a walking McDonald’s advertisement with that new red dress, but worse things have happened.

  • Having To Cover Up For Work

Most shops, restaurants and companies aren’t about you showing off your ink at work. It’s getting better, but most of the time we are forced to cover. This is especially bad if you have a tattoo in the middle of your arm or leg (long sleeves in the summer is always an awful idea). But, hey, Urban Outfitters is always hiring? Don’t worry gals, it’ll all be better soon.

  • When Everyone Asks To See It + What It Means

If you have never been asked this, you probably don’t have a visible tattoo.. in which case you are kind of lucky. Yes you can see it. No it didn’t hurt that bad. That’s cool you wanna get one too.

Assuming it means something is kind of annoying for the people who just wanted some nice art. A lot of the time, people do have an explanation, but it also doesn’t mean they want to tell you about it: It could be personal!

Thank you for the compliments, but we are sick of explaining.

  • People Reminding You That “Men Don’t Like Women With Tattoos”

*Flips Hair*

Is there any water in that pool? I can’t even tell cause its so SHALLOW!!!!!

But, really, if you’re that big of a tool…. keep on walking.

People Assume That You Must Be A Lesbian, Do Drugs and Not Go To School.

If you are a lesbian who does drugs and happens to not go to school, DO YOU, BOO. But, often people think that if you have a tattoo at least one of these must be true. I’m sorry that my portrait of my dead cat leads you to these assumptions!

Planning A Trip on a College Budget: Tips + Tricks!

Expanding your horizons past your hometown or college campus may seem impossible right now, but, with the right amount of planning ahead, it could be more doable than you think.

First.. here’s a story:

I have a ridiculous ‘need’ to travel (more of a want, but in my heart it’s a need). My entire life i’ve gotten such a thrill out of trips, and even planning trips. I think it’s so important to immerse yourself in other cultures and see as much as you can in your life.

So far, I think I’m doing an okay job. I know I’ve seen more then some people have seen in their entire lives (which makes me incredibly sad).

I have a few trips stored away until I’m done with college: Europe, Asia and various islands. I don’t even want to think about planning those trips until I have the money to see what I want to see and do what I want to do FULLY. I’m not going to fly 13 hours to half-ass it.

But, while I was thinking up all these foreign trips, I realized that there was so much I still haven’t seen in my own country.. THE USA. Despite all the racist, homophobic and politically effed-up stuff happening in America in the moment, it’s a gorgeous country.. and I’ve only seen a very small chunk of it.

My boyfriend and I have decided to travel at the end of May, when school is out, and to make it achievable in terms of budget and planning.

IMG_2029

We are planning a road trip from Chicago –> Toronto –> Niagra Falls –> Upstate New York  –> Bar Harbor, Maine –> Portland, Maine –> Boston –> New York City –> Washington D.C.

That’s 8 locations in around 12-14 days. We at first thought this was insane and impossible to do with the amount of money we have..

Here’s how we planned and made it doable..

Tips + Tricks for Planning a Trip on a College Budget:

*Disclaimer: No trip is ever going to be THAT cheap. You have to spend a little money to have a nice time, this is just how to keep your costs down.

  • Be Realistic: Before even starting to plan, know how much money you can put toward the trip (all people involved). Save that money! If you have to, open a savings account at your bank. If you trust yourself, throw the money in jar and put it in your closet. Another thing you need to be realistic about, if you can’t afford a trip to the outback of Australia (unless you’re in Australia), don’t even make it an option. Don’t choose places that are unachievable; you’ll get there one day!
  • Planes, Trains or Automobiles: Transportation is one of the biggest parts about planning a trip.. I mean you do have to GET THERE after all..

If you are planning to go to one central location, I would 100% recommend taking a plane; it’s mostly painless and gets you where you wanna go quickly. For airfare, I suggest checking TONS of sites and playing around with dates as much as you can to find the BEST deal (www.cheapoair.com has some good deals).

If you want to go to several locations, as long as they’re in your country, a road trip may be the best option. There are some real downsides to this option, unfortunately. If you are under the age of 25, renting a car is possible.. but ridiculously expensive. If you take that price plus the price of all the gas you’re going to use, it’s not a smart option. If you have a car or someone has a car you can use, use it. Be sure to plan for the gas you will use the whole trip. There is an awesome site for people planning a road trip.. roadtrippers.com allows you to completely map out your trip (and includes attractions and places to see along the way) and calculates your gas expenses depending on where you want to stop. I’ve been using it and it’s awesome.

– The train is also a perfectly good option. Amtrak hits a ton of major cities all over the  country. This is great if you have a fear of flying, and even if you don’t you can sometimes find better deals on train tickets versus plane tickets. Of course, there are some bad things about this option. It will take you WAAAAY longer to get where you’re going. Usually, the prices aren’t that much better than flying.. especially if you find a great flight.

  • Lodging: Hotels can be crazy expensive; I’m talking upwards of $200 a night in major cities. If you are on a college budget, this is a big no-no! But, that doesn’t mean you have no options of places to stay:

– AirBNB: I cannot hype up AirBNB enough. It’s an online site, and app, that allows you to book either a whole home or private room in people’s private residences (sounds creepy, but it’s a big thing now). You can find some insanely great prices. I, for example, found places for around $30 a night for my trip. Some of the places do require a minimum night stay (usually 2 nights, if they do).. which could be a problem for some people. Most of these places are really, really nice too! Check out their website: www.airbnb.com

– Hostels: I’m not totally sure about the quality or safety of these places, cause some of them can be kind of grimey, but, if you need a cheap place to stay these will definitely do.

– Camping: Nothing wrong with roughing it. If your location makes camping doable, go for it! There are tons of campsites that only charge like $20 a night (so cheap).

  • Other Costs:

– Food isn’t free: There are cheap ways to do it. Eat in your hotel, bring snacks, find a place with free breakfast to stay at, but at the end of the day.. you’re going to have to eat. Food is a big part of some cities, so make sure to try it all out. Think out how much you want to allow yourself each day for food (realistically) and then add up the meals per day and how many days you’re there.

– Things to do: If you are a great tourist, like me, you probably want to do some interesting things the town/city has to offer. Allow yourself some extra cash for some stuff to do. You don’t have to go crazy, but some fun is needed.

Planning a trip can be tedious and hard, but if you give yourself enough time, anything is possible.

Start now!

How I Stay Energized Without Coffee (From A Former Caffeine Addict)

About a year ago, my daily routine included waking up and going for a Starbucks black iced coffee. I would go to class, get whatever else I needed to get done and then end up going for another cup. The typical routine for a college student (especially in the busy city). It was great for a while; I felt like a superhero able to do whatever I needed. I had extra energy to work out and stay up all night to finish homework.  I went to Starbucks so often that I had earned the privilege of the almighty GOLD CARD (a special gold, glittery card with your name on it which gives you a free drink after 12 purchased drinks).

I thought everything was great until I noticed that the stimulant had started stimulating.. but way too much. It triggered my anxiety disorder and had me shaking and in full-blown panic mode. I knew I had to kick it to the curb. Not only were my poor teeth suffering from the heavy staining of black coffee, but my nervous system just couldn’t take it anymore. I was pretty upset that I had to let it go; there is nothing I love more than a fresh brewed cup. But now, a full year later, I am doing completely fine without it.

Here are some ways that I keep energized WITHOUT coffee..

1. TEA

If there is one thing I could hype up to everyone.. it’s tea. Not only are a good amount of teas really healthy for you, but most of them taste really, really great. There are plenty of caffeinated options such as green tea and black tea that range from 25-70 mg which is plenty to give you a buzz to keep going; brewed coffee has 200 mg of caffeine (and if you’re anything like me.. beware). When I’m really not feeling caffeine at all, Rooibos tea is great caffeine-free option and they have the best flavors.

2. EXERCISE

It may sound backwards, “how can putting out more energy make me less tired?” But, believe it or not, working out is one of the best things you can do to feel more energized. Even if it’s as simple as a walk around the hood or a bike ride with your guy/gal (or even your dog if you have a basket) you are getting your heart pumping and body moving which is enough to make you feel better.

3. DIET

Nobody’s perfect: I can’t say this enough when it comes to eating. Especially if you’re from the Midwest like I am, you understand that we love food and no one can stop us. But if you substitute your deep dish and everything Portillo’s for some healthy alternatives you will notice a serious shift in your mood and energy levels. When the body is getting the nourishment it’s supposed to be, you will feel it from the inside. Start your morning with a healthy breakfast instead of a few donuts and notice the difference. It truly speaks for itself.

4. SLEEP MORE THAN 4 HOURS

I know.. so hard, right? If you live a busy life you know how hard it can be to get a good nights sleep. But, try your best to not put sleep on the back burner. Your body needs at least 6 hours to be able to function properly throughout the day (even though 8 is recommended). So, if you can, cut your night out on the town a few hours early (if the sun is coming up you’ve probably over done it) and get that needed sleep time. You will feel way more energized than you thought possible.

5. KEEP BUSY

If you have a full day agenda, you will keep moving and keep focused which in turn keeps you from sitting around and feeling sluggish. Start a hobby, join a club, make plans with friends you haven’t seen in a while and get going! There is a good chance you’re not as tired as you think you are.

If you guys can relate to the coffee blues, then try out some of these tips and you will no longer be reaching for that cup o’ joe.

6 Struggles a Chicago Student Searching for an Apartment Knows Too Well..

The time has come to leave the dorm rooms behind and say hello to your own bedroom. You’re in your twenties and the thought process is like: “I’ll just find an apartment this year.. they’re everywhere”… and yes.. they are.. but, it is a little harder then that. With Fall quickly approaching, know what to remember and look for while on the hunt:

1. You Want the IKEA magazine apartment on a student loan budget

The easiest way to sum this struggle up is that you probably have exceptional taste and standards.. which is normally awesome. But, unfortunately your Logan Square apartment might not be exactly what you have envisioned. I mean come on, what do you expect for $700 a month. It’s all about how you decorate and hide the imperfections. Sorry, but unless you have the money you will not be living on the Gold Coast… and that is OKAY.. you are broke probably.

2. You Find the Perfect One! (or So You Thought)

“A 2-bedroom, 1 Bath place in the middle of Wicker Park for $900 a month? The pictures look sooo nice.” I think we have all been here. You have found a great deal and it looks like what you want (and there’s even exposed brick). You schedule a viewing, you walk in AND WHAT THE HELL IS THIS. It’s not hard to take make a place look okay through pictures. Just know that going in you may not see exactly what you’re expecting. Again, going back to #1, if you don’t have a lot of money.. don’t expect the best in Chicago.

3. UTILITIES

This pretty much speaks for itself. Water, gas, electric, cable, and internet: AND NO YOU CANNOT LIVE BY CANDLELIGHT AND BRUSH YOUR TEETH WITH BOTTLED WATER WHILE WATCHING NETFLIX OFF YOUR LAPTOP. I mean you can, but who really wants to do that. Just remember while looking for apartments you will want to factor in the extra $100-$150 bucks a month and don’t think just because you didn’t use any that the roommates will cover you… they will kill you.

4. Access To The CTA

Unless you are that one kid, you don’t have your car in the city (PARKING AND GAS DOWNTOWN ARE BOTH CRAZY OVERPRICED) and you rely heavily on the Chicago Transit buses and train lines. Most colleges now provide the Ventra Student Pass which allows unlimited usage for one low fee included in the tuition.. which is super nice. So, while looking for your new place, pay attention to where the closest transit is located. If you are on Craigslist and it says “close to transit” that could be BLOCKS away. Unless you want to waste your spending money on Uber rides.. plan ahead.

5. Know What Neighborhood You’d Like To Be In

Do not blindly go into apartment searching and wind up in Englewood (sorry Englewood). Do your research online and ask fellow students and Chicagoans where they live. Chicago can be a threatening place if you don’t know where to be. Places like Wicker Park, Logan Square, University Village and Lincoln Park are good spots to be if you can find a deal.

6. Finding The Right Place Could Take Weeks

Don’t just jump into the first place you look at (unless you waited til the very last minute). Try at least 3 places and make the decision then. Scrolling through Craigslist and other apartment searching websites can be super annoying and tedious, but if you want the apartment of your undergrad dreams then recruit your roommates and start a hunt.

Don’t get discouraged, keep looking and you will find a decent place to live. We are in this together, College Kids.
